I give you Henker. I know this isn't for everyone, but we have a few metalheads here on Oppo.

That's pretty bastard technical, especially the drumming - good stuff. I do miss the days when death metal drums went thud instead of click though, the real crusty late 80s/early 90s stuff like Autopsy, Bolt Thrower etc. Good find!

Metal-wise, been listening to this quite a bit lately:

Takes a little while to reach the blast money shot, but I listen to tons of this strung-out black metal/post-rock and this track stood out particularly.

I miss the THUDS OF DOOOOOM myself, but hardly ANYTHING compares to Bolt Thrower (they never bothered with puny drums, they used howitzers :P)

What I like with Henker is that they seem to do stuff the way they like, not the way people tell them to.

Panopticon was new to me, never heard them before, great stuff. I've been listening to Woods of Ypres a lot the past month.

Edit: Forgot to tell you, I'm from Norway. Metal is in my blood, be it doom, death, post, black.. :)

Didn't Paradise Lost use a sample of an actual explosion for a drum sound in the early days... or did I imagine it?

Well of course they won't like being told how to do something, they're French ;) - France has come along in huge leaps in recent years for metal (although half of that could just be down to Neige-related bands as the guys in about 384 projects), stuff like Amesoeurs, Deathspell Omega etc - though I don't follow French DM particularly closely.

WOY I like, its been a couple of years since I listened to them though so thanks for reminding me - that track reminds me a little of Sentenced :)

Norway eh, you need to tell some of your countrymen (Enslaved etc) to go back to singing in Norwegian instead of pandering to the English language. Make any music yourself?

As far as I know they DID use an actual explosion indeed. And of course we can't tell the french anything :P But yeah, french metal have come a LONG way, french rockabilly as well.

I wish I could get Enslaved and such to sing in Norwegian, but that's not mainstream enoguh.. so..

Nah, don't make any music myself, can't play any instrument if my life depended on it. I do sing tho'.. or growl, but I need a band :P And I have a very narrow range, think Micahel Poulsen (Dominus/Volbeat).. I can go deep, I can growl, I can scream... but I can't sing as such.

Oh I know they can't be told... I had a French gf for several years!

Half the fun of early Norse BM was translating it - apart from Immortal where half the fun was reading their nonsensical English lyrics ;)

Don't let that stop you man. I can neither sing in the proper sense nor play more than a handful of chords and I've got 12 years, three bands and support gigs with some great and reasonably big BM bands under my belt. The trick is surround yourself with people who CAN play, fill the gaps between what they're doing with the right kind of screaming (the sort that they don't want to attempt for their own health) and use such horrendous distortion that people don't spot the duff notes ;)

Oh, since you're a discerning fellow, see what you think of this - for my money this is the best BM album to date - 14 years on and I still hear new stuff going on with each listen:

Half the fun for us nordics was translating the stuff as well :P It was mostly gibberish :P

Weakling eh? I like it, but whoever is on the vocals uses his voice wrong.. he's screaming with his throat, not his stomach.. Makes it sound strained, and it WILL fuck up his vocal cords quite badly. The music it self is right up my alley, but the vocals need something (if it's you on vocals here I'm truly sorry)

Heh no, its not me! No blatant self-promotion going on haha! though I do like that kinda vocal style, like early In The Woods..., Burzum (with the usual disclaimer that no, I don't like his politics but the music is great) or Fleurety (where the vocalist did permanently damage his voice). IMHO its only really 'wrong' if they're actually going for a different sound and don't know the risks.

Yeah, fuck Varg... But Burzum was awesome if we just listen to the music.

That part of "do not know the risk" is what troubles me.. lot's of people dont seem to understand that they can't make a living out of this if they don't take care of them selves (and that part with "I do this because of music, nothing else" died with Mozart) :P
